Juniors Academy

Boys and girls aged 6 years and above are very welcome to join our training sessions which are held on Sunday mornings from 10 – 11am on the astro turf pitch behind Bingham Leisure Centre
No previous experience is necessary. Basic hockey skills are taught by fully qualified and CRB checked coaches.

No special clothing is required other than trainers suitable for the astro pitch
(football trainers rather than running/fashion).

Shinpads are MANDATORY and the coaches reserve the right to ask a child without shinpads to sit out of sessions/matches.Sticks are available to borrow at sessions, however it is better for development that each child has their own hockey stick so that they are able to practise at home. Equally, they need to get used to the ‘feel’ and weight of a stick rather than chopping and changing each week according to availability at pitch side.  (Sticks can be purchased for as little as £10 from most sports shops.  We recommend the Hockey Warehouse in Leicester as the best stockist.

We STRONGLY RECOMMEND the use of Gum Shields and left hand protection gloves but these items are not currently mandatory.

All youngsters over the age of 9 will have the opportunity to play in mini-tournaments against other clubs. At the discretion of the coaches, children aged 7 and over may also be invited to play in matches. The age groups are Under 11’s,  Under 13’s and Under 15’s.  We also compete in an Under 15 League.

South Nottingham Vs Derwent  29/11/09
U18’s Plate Round 2
HT 5-0  FT 6-2
Scorers – James Markwick 2, Matt Woods, David Edwards, Tom Spencer, Ryan Day.

The South boys arrived nice an early for a 1pm start only to be told that the start had been delayed till 2pm. The plus side of this is that it gave Coach Adam Innocent the chance to have a long chat with his troops and run a mini training session before the game.

Suitably prepared South got off to the perfect start when Matt Woods had an opportunity to fire off a reverse stick shot in just the 4 minute, he did just that and rattled the back board to give South a 1-0 lead. South settled into the game well, obeyed orders and took control from the outset. James Markwick was well placed to bundle the ball over the line to give South a 2-0 lead on 16 minutes. South didn’t need to wait long for their third and the moment-of-the-match on 20 minutes when David Edwards found himself free in the D, steadied himself, looked up and fired an absolute thunderbolt past the Derwent keeper!!. South continued to dominate the 1st half and on 27 minutes Tom Spencer picked up a lose ball in the D and fired into the bottom corner. On the stroke of half-time James Markwick completed a brace of goals with a smart reverse stick finish.

Being 5-0 up at half-time gave Coach Adam Innocent the opportunity to have a look at a few different things in the second half. Derwent pulled a goal back on 37 minutes but Ryan Day put the result beyond doubt on the 40th minute when he deflected well past the Derwent Keeper.

Despite excellent defensive work from Alex Jackson, Tom, Luke and Joe, Derwent got a last minute consolation to bring the game to a close at 6-2 to South. Jack Howard and Stevie Powell also contributed well in midfield. Well done to James Bateman for leading his troops onwards into the next round and another very impressive performance from keeper Freddie Sail as he progresses at an extremely fast pace.

A lot of positives came from this game and the lads can now look forward to a home tie against Litchfield in the last 16, details to follow.
