Match report South Notts Ladies v Woodthorpe Ladies 23.03.19
Under 18s players all welcomed by the team. We are so lucky in having such a pool of skilled and enthusiastic players.
Woodthorpe Ladies have played together as a team for many years. As ever, it was a contest between South’s youth, speed and enthusiasm, the Terriers, against slower, canny and experienced Woodthorpe Warriors.
One difference between the two teams boiled down to “finishing” in the circle. Woodthorpe created more chances but, thanks to our great defence, were able to take advantage in only a small number, and they were goalmouth scrambles rather than by open play. But none of our fewer chances were able to rifle past their goalkeeper.
Elizabeth and Mel played a sterling game as Alpine Barrier and Rock of Gibraltar respectively. Steely-eyed and vigorous. They scare me as a spectator, what must they do to the opposition?
Jo, Alice and Sophie drilled smartly at the back to great effect. Keeping the formation steady, and marking well.
Another difference between the teams was that Woodthorpe used their fast wings repeatedly to try to get round behind our defence. Putting us on the back foot.
When in contrast, Ruby got a pass on our right wing, she absolutely scorched round behind their defence and was able to cross the ball to the D.
Another difference between the teams was that unmarked South players did not receive enough good passes up front to use our speed.
Katrina, Poppy and Caroline played a steady and awesome game in midfield. They guided our Team into highly watchable, strong, thoughtful, passing play. Really uplifted the Team into a strong welded, coherent unit. If next season, we start off playing as we end this season, we will do brilliantly.
Woodthorpe must have spent much time advance planning, how to try to neutralise the combined athletic and hockey skills of Katrina, Poppy and Caroline, who started as they meant to finish, in keeping position mid-field; always there supporting attack and supporting defence.
Beth, Izzy B and Ruby ran hard at the canny and experienced Woodthorpe defence, their senior experience soaked up our repeated attacks, which started out of defence as well as starting out of mid-field.
We were all disappointed at the scoreline 0-4 which did not reflect the great effort and commitment shown by every one of the TEAM. A Team to be very proud of. Five star effort. No disgrace, everyone played well, we were out-thought by seniority and experience.
The County Shield final is on 6 April. 11.00 at the Beeston ground v Southwell Brincliffe United.

All team players who are unable to play are ALWAYS welcome on the touchline. It really makes a difference. And bring along relatives and friends, to provide a Wall of Sound in our support.
