Score 6:2 15/09/2018 vs Boot 4’s (Away) Our 2nd pre-season friendly fixture saw wholesale changes to the team, bringing a blend of youth (Sam Clough) and experience (the rest of the team) together for a local derby against a team we will face in the upcoming league season - Boots 4’s - (skippered by an ex South member, Richard Butler)! We also welcomed new club member Dan Slinger and a couple of returning members, Brian Blackmore and Andy Jenkins to the fold! Following some energetic exchanges in the first 10 minutes, a good flowing move resulted in a penalty corner for South, which was swiftly dispatched by Grozzy with a firm flick into the top left corner thanks to a lightning drag out by Batty and solid trap by Gary P! (0-1) South, now with the upper hand, increased the pressure and more good passing allowed Batty (playing up front) to double the lead with a pile driver strike from the top of the D! (0-2) With half-time approaching, Boots upped their game and switched the play left to right with pace, splitting our defence allowing a simple finish underneath the advancing Simon R from close range.. (1-2) South swiftly rallied, a great move down the right saw young Sam C take on the entire Boots defence, driving into the D, drawing the keeper, then squaring to Grozzy for a simple tap in from the top of the D- only for it to go agonisingly wide!! Half time was a welcome respite for all.. Boots started the 2nd half much the brighter and earned a short corner. Following a great save from Simon, the rebound unfortunately fell straight to a Boots player who finished neatly.. Scores level! (2-2) This lead to a few nervous moments, but continued pressure from an experienced South side saw the chances increase, the next South short corner was a slip left to Will B who worked the ball to Batty for a smart finish into the net. (2-3) Boots started to chase the game leaving more space for us to exploit, leading to the next chance - a great passing move down the left, ending with Grozzy taking on the defender and lifting over the advancing keeper from the centre of the D. (2-4) Chances were coming thick and fast now as Boots found it more and more difficult to break through, with quite a few chances flying high and wide by makeshift forward AJ following an injury scare - (thanks to Ellz for stepping at left back to cover).. The increased pressure lead to another shorty, this time Sharpie fancied a go from the top, a neat drag out from Ellz bypassed the castle to the covering Grozzy who slid the ball to AJ, slotting it past the keeper with a neat back post deflection. (2-5) By now, Boots knew the game was up and the final goal came from a high South press, Gaz P intercepting the Boots 16 hit, driving into the D and rifling it, waist high through the keeper in to the net! Great finish! (2-6) Great performances all round, thoroughly enjoyable match had by all! Thanks to Boots for supplying the umpires..
