Match report from Stuart Croston :
SNHC 2’s vs Barton HC 3’s
09/02/2019
A wild and windy winter’s day saw 3rd place South welcome a beleaguered Barton 3rd team to The Banks - ahead of the game it was announced the oppo were without their Captain and were down to a bare 10 - not a great omen as they started the day 2nd from bottom of the division.
We welcomed back Mark Green to the team following his logistical support to UK Table Tennis (Dad’s Taxi for his talented offspring) and debutant Henry Dixon. Tom Hall also made a return to the team following a disappearance!
Skipper Stuart Croston aka Grozzy announced a change of formation to 3-5-2 to allow for more attacking options - a decision made easier by the lack of opposition numbers!
The game, as expected, was little one sided and the goals came fairly easily - even if it wasn’t our best champagne hockey.. Goals as follows:
1. Mikey - Back post finish from Jon Lane Cross.
2. Grozzy - chest high volley after 1-2 off keeper’s chest.
3. Grozzy - Roofed half volley after 1-2 off keeper’s chest again.
4. Grozzy - Close range finish “dug out” from under keeper.
5. Elliot Dixon - Back post tap in following sustained pressure.
Half Time : 5-0 South
6. Grozzy - Flick finish from middle of crowded D.
7. Jon Lane - Short corner strike, bottom left.
8. Jon Lane - Topped strike from top of D, wrong footed keeper.
9. Grozzy - Best goal of the day - Team goal worked from defence through midfield up to Mikey on right, squared to Grozzy, top D first time slap shot finish past keeper.
10. Will Brydonaka Wilston - Sweet power flick finish following a generous pass from defender in the D.
11. Grozzy - High press from Ellz won ball back on 25yd line, slipped Mikey in who squared again for Grozzy to slot another home from top of D.
Many more chances were kept out by their impressive keeper and other chances were spurned, but the opportunities kept flowing thanks to the high pressing of the front line and the sweeping up in midfield.
Will B ensured all areas of the pitch were distributed to allowing us to keep knocking on the door!
Barton barely threatened our goal all match with the steadfastness of our defensive unit, despite some rocky moments - leading to a final score line of 11-0 to the home side!
Scorers - Grozzy (6), J Lane (2), Mike, Ells & Will!
Overall an impressive score line, scoring more goals than players that Barton brought, but still a few areas that we need to work on when we face stiffer opposition..
Many thanks to Ray & Dick for umpiring.
Onwards to next week away to impressive Derwent 4’s...
