Match Report South Notts 1sts 2 v Nottingham University 4ths 3

On a cold January Saturday, South Notts fired up their best performance of the season but just fell short against the top of the league Nottingham Uni.

With a bare 11, South Notts knew they would be up against it and it showed in the opening exchanges with Notts Uni controlling the game and taking the lead with a reverse stick shot to the near post. However, the goal moved south into gear and they produced some of their best attacking play of the game. Tireless running from front two the returning Mikey and Tom set the example with Tom being a constant nuisance to the Notts Uni defence and it was Tom who came closest with a ferocious effort rocketing off the post.

In control South were caught upfield and a smart counter attack from Notts Uni saw them go into a 2-0 lead at half time.

Captain Gaz Bland, rallied his troops at half time and they responded. Smarter midfield play led by the brilliant Brainz saw South gain control of the ball further up the pitch and force a short corner. A smart routine led by Brainz finding Matty at the backpost to put South back in the match.

Again South were undone by a clinical Notts Uni breakaway to make it 3-1.

Not giving in, South started playing higher with full backs Joey and Gaz tireless in their runs and we even saw Tommy P in the final third of the pitch. Smart play saw Tom C with space at the top of the d to fire home a goal his tireless running deserves.

Now it was South doing the pressing and looking like they could get something out of the game but we’re thwarted by an organised Uni defence.

Again South showed, as they did earlier in the season, they can go toe to toe with the best sides in the league. Arguably their performance of the season and something they must build on in the upcoming fixtures to overturn some disappointing late goals in the first half of the season.
