22.02.20 South Notts Ladies v W Bridgford for club
Two teams at the top of the league table fighting for promotion. High Noon shoot out!
West Bridgford started out as if they had a point to prove and sent waves of powerful attacks on the South Notts goal. These were capably despatched by a stern Eleanor Wallace and an even sterner Elizabeth Turner in goal. But in a confused muddle, with too many defenders crowded in our D , one unluckily trickled over our line. 0-1 to West Bridgford .
Still all to play for, and W/B were putting up defensive shutters so that it was still 0-1 at half time.
Katrina Blunden, Poppy Scothern and Ruby Ryan started to play it fast and wide to get our forwards round the back of the W/B defence. Speedy Abbie Rimmington and racing Emma Turner grabbed all opportunities and kept finding Beth Marshall and Julie Whalley lurking in deadly fashion on the W/B keeper. But despite South dominating possession, the W/B defensive shutters stayed solidly closed.
At this point a number of South’s men’s 2nd XI, on for the next match, were racing up early to give support to our South Ladies in the hour of need. Still 0-1. Their noisy enthusiasm gave extra inspiration to our Ladies, who were redoubling every effort.
Alice Hounslow, Sophie Runciman and Bella Whalley showed speed and great tactical skill in creating opportunities to go forward. Kate Parker and Liberty Rowe in constant support, demonstrated the team’s strength in depth but still 0-1.
Then an astonishing freak goal by W/B made it 0-2. This really set the game alight and Emma Turner, accelerating on to a deflection, swiftly and promptly redirected it into the W/B goal. 1-2. The club’s male supporters set up a cheer that could have been heard in Leeds. And South’s efforts redoubled.
Then a drive from Katrina hit the W/B backboard, massive cheers again, but the whistle had already blown for a previous infringement, so no goal.1-2.
Then Liberty Rowe saw a gap in the W/B defence, and cunningly drilled through a penetrating ball. Massive cheers again. But a lucky (?) W/B stick deflected it away at the last moment.
South Notts Ladies gave it everything but on the day, Lady Luck did not shine upon us. A disappointing 1-2 loss.
Thanks to Simon Recaldin for umpiring.
Played 13, won 12, lost 1. Goals for 60, against 11.
League Points. South Notts 36, W/B 29. First and Second in the League division!
