South Notts Ladies 1st XI v Redhill 1st XI
The latest round of the County Shield knock-out competition. South Nottingham’s young side went out against a very experienced senior side from Redhill, top of two league divisions above us. South heads two divisions further down in the league.
The opening minutes were tense and vigorous as both teams tried to explore the other’s strengths and weaknesses. Redhill opened the scoring but team Captain Bethany Marshall for South Nottingham, fought straight back with a goal on a swift and cunning counter-attack. 1-1 and all to play for.
Redhill then moved into overdrive to take control with quick passing and pouncing fastest on any 50/50 ball. Making the easy pass; passing the ball quickly and early; passing the ball accurately.
Elizabeth Turner in South’s goal had an extremely busy afternoon and made a series of memorable saves. The superb Scarlett Duckett and Eleanor Wallace in defence, both very capably dealt with Redhill’s many attacks, trying to reduce the pressure on Elizabeth, so far as possible.
Caroline Brackenbury and Katrina Blunden were indeed towers of speedy, turbo-charged energy, up behind the forwards and back helping defenders. Covering vast areas of ground.
India Clark showed increasing maturity in the crispness of her tackling and passing. Poppy Scothern’s impressive reading of the game is now second to none. Ruby Ryan’s speed and skills were always to the fore, never letting an opportunity pass.
Bella Whalley’s smooth dynamic control in support of our forwards, together with Kate Parker and Becky Lindley, kept up consistent pressure on Redhill. The combination of Louise Price, Abbie Rimmington, Emma Turner, and Bethany Marshall kept giving the tight Redhill defence a serious and continuous headache, but alas no goals. Redhill’s years of senior defensive experience made all the difference.
Yes, South lost to a very senior side, but certainly no disgrace. It could have been a great deal worse had all our team not been so hard-working and team-spirited. Well done, everyone!
