Match Report SNHC 2s V Newark 2s 12.09.20 Away

The first game of the season..... after training on Thursday we had a few heavy legs on show!!! But thankfully not so much from the juniors in the side!!
The game stared with early exchanges, with Newark having the better chances. The South defence held strong marshalled by Mark Doney in the net. With us us missing the power that is Wilston and Andy Wallace we re-shuffled at the back seeing Jon partner the returning Ben Walker.... having been playing elsewhere for the last 5 years it’s good to see him back in South’s colours!! We did manage a couple of attempts including a couple of close ones. Newark did eventually break the deadlock with such a memorial goal I’ve already forgotten it. Half time came and went along with gallons of water taken on board. Arthur playing right at the back continued to show some great play linking up with Rhys and Fin a number of times, Hamza worked the left and almost made it through but the door always just seemed to shut at the last second. Newark added their 2nd after a break ended in a pen corner, a well ish worked routine ended with the goal after a save from Mark, a stop by Jon and eventually the ball being lifted over Mark and past Jon on the line. Not really fair on us at that stage as we’d really come back into the game. Thankfully the heads didn’t drop we kept banging that door, the chance came.... some quick passing from back to front saw brothers Ian and Jon in the D, Ian to Jon, keeper drawn... Jon to Ian he can’t miss..... he didn’t because he was knocked off the ball a returning defender, the umps took his time...... stroke to be given....? no another pen corner which Sharpy fires just wide! The final whistle blew 2-0 to Newark, a fair result was probably 1-1 or at the very least 2-1 had we’d been awarded what looked to all like a stone cold stroke, but as we know there are always 23 umpires on a pitch at anyone time sadly the 2 with the whistles decided not!
Good to see the juniors play well, and to see Joshua Lawes make a club debut for us! Onto next week with some key players returning after the Covid enforced extended break!
