Ladies Match Report - Sat 10 Oct v West Bridgford IV. Draw 0-0.

Captain Eleanor Wallace led out our ladies 1st XI on a cold and stormy afternoon v West Bridgford 9th IV . Shortly after push-back, the sun came out to shine on the superb quality of our forward line.

West Bridgford started with a storm of attacks capably fended off by Mel Park, Alice Hounslow, Liberty Price and Captain Eleanor Wallace. If anything scraped past them, they found themselves confronted by our fearsome “Rock of Gibraltar” Elizabeth Turner in goal. In fine driving form. She scares the spectators, so heaven knows what she does to playing opponents!

Returning club member Gemma Robinson, playing up front on the left wing, reminded us all of her immense pace and style. Speeding into unmarked spaces, always making herself visible for passes, putting immense pressure on the West Bridgford defenders. As did new member Maddie Whalley, rocketing up on the right wing, getting round behind the defenders and crossing hard, with pinpoint accuracy, into the D.

It was a joy to see Emma Turner back again at centre forward, scything through the West Bridgford defence like a hot knife through butter. And when she was halted, Poppy Scothern and Ruby Ryan were following up in close vigorous support. Great teamwork. Great commitment from all.

In midfield, Caroline Brackenbury and Katrina Blunden were shining stars. They each covered a formidable amount of ground. Their shrewd creative passes were a joy to behold and applaud. India Clark too, was not left behind in energy and skills, challenging every loose ball.

Our team had a quiet compliment from the West Bridgford umpire after the game. He complimented our newly promoted side on our energy and skills, particularly from the under 18s in our Team, which mirrored those of our seniors.

“A good Team, not to be taken lightly” . And quite right too.

An evenly matched game. Each set of dynamic forwards and midfielders was kept at bay by each set of determined defences. Our team is beginning to gel well, with better and practised teamwork, and we might even have won the game by a whisker. Good to see injured vice-captain Jo Shaw back on the touchline offering helpful advice and support.

Welcomed spectators included an injured Julie Whalley, and India Clark’s parents ( all standing outside the caged playing area as per Covid19) providing a mini Wall of Sound in support .

Thank you to Simon Recaldin for umpiring. Final score 0-0, so next time, all to play for.
