SNHC Ladies Match Report – Saturday 24 Oct

Away v Beeston 7s Final Score 0-0

An away fixture at Beeston is always met with at least a small degree of trepidation and this one was no different. Beeston 7s finished mid table last season and currently sit 2nd in the division . With South only just returning to this division we knew we would have to step it up a bit. However, after last week’s win against SBU, the South Nottingham team were in a positive frame of mind.

With team coach Euan having gone AWOL (how was Goosedale Euan??!), Captain, Eleanor Wallace, made sure everyone was warmed up and knew exactly what their positions were.

From the start it was clear that South were going to be no pushover with strong defending by Mel, Eleanor, Alice and Liberty and with the reassurance of Elizabeth in goal, any attacks made by  Beeston were quickly dealt with. Yes, there were a few scary moments, but nothing that phased us too much or broke our resolve.

Midfielders (Caroline, Katrina, India, Ruby) showed a perfect mix of youth and experience and worked well with the Forwards (Gemma, Maddie and Poppy) for South to make some great moves from midfield into attack and put their goalie and defence under pressure.

Half Time came and with Euan still MIA, the Captain’s pep talk served to remind the team of what had been practiced at training and had been successful for us last season.

All this was taken on board and with Beeston seemingly realising that this was not going to be an easy 3 points after all, had upped their game. But so had South! On balance, Beeston probably had more time in our goal area in the 2nd half but when South had the ball and were on the attack, found space and made some great passes using Mel at the back to find unmarked players to then move forward.

The second half was evenly matched, much like the previous half, but South kept battling on at either end of the pitch to keep Beeston 7s to a nil nil draw. Beeston were as expected - a young, quick and well drilled side and South were as usual, a great mixture of youth, experience and determination.  South will take the 1 point from this match and go into the break feeling, quite rightly, proud of their performance today.

Captain’s MOM: Liberty Price for determined defending. Great game Liberty!
