| Match Report | On a somewhat chilly and dull day the we all headed up the A46 to our local rivals Newark. At the beginning of the season we ran out 3-1 winners, with all 3 goals going to Grozzy. After the first few minutes it was clear that Captain Cav was determined not to miss out this time around! Newark started the game looking pretty strong, they put together some nice passing moves but never really penetrated our solid back 4. Fortunately, we didn't take long to get on the scoring sheet and this to some extent seemed to stunt Newark's early confidence. The 4th minute brought goal number 1, which came from a ball through to Grozzy who held it up waiting for support to arrive, he slipped it to Cav for a low drilled shot across keeper. It was one of those that was hit so hard that I don't think anyone saw the ball, we all just heard the smash of the backboard! I'm not sure the Newark keeper ever recovered from this and he seemed in shock or was just a bit intimidated for the rest of the game! Goal 2 in the 8th minute was a classic PC Cav drag flick finish. There was no stopping this one either - straight in the top corner. Goal 3 was a well drilled defence splitting pass to Grozzy in the final 25, he showed some nice skills at top of D, sat the keeper down and neatly finished on the reverse into the goal from top of D. I think it was shortly after this that yours truly got a bit over excited and got called out for a clumsy 'stick tackle' inside our 25. The umpire clearly didn't appreciate my lack of skill and must have thought I was such a good player that I could do such things deliberately, without warning I got a green card….. I think my first ever in over 15 years of playing for South! Shortly after I was back on the pitch came goal number 4 in the 28th minute. It came from a Newark 16 mis-hit intercepted by Grozzy and slid through to Ellz for a low drilled finish 1-on-1 with the keeper. Goal 5 was a Maradona / Cav solo effort, dancing through entire Newark midfield, then defence, and a smashed finish into the net. We went in at half-time 5-0 up, the second half didn't bring any further goals from South despite a few shorties and having the lion's share of the ball and chances. We conceded a goal in the 60th minute, but that didn't take the gloss off another fine team performance. |
