Match Report

The mighty South were treated to a trip to Derby beach for winning the league on a cloudy and muggy afternoon.

A strong start with lots of possession and south were controlling the game. 6 minutes in, debutant Johnny burst onto the scene with a superb solo goal, picking up the ball outside the 25, before calmly dribbling past a few defenders and unleashing a hit into the bottom left corner. 1-0 South!

South continued to hunt for the second against a Derby team starting to find their feet. High work rate, winning the ball back high up the pitch led to few short corners for South. After a few close misses, Cavan opts against the flick and dribbled past the rushing defenders, firing the ball home to give South that needed second.

A stubborn Derby responded with good possession to bring the game back into balance. Ben and Leon at the back remained unfazed with solid tackles to dampen Derbys spirit. Tommy was ready and alert to make a few great saves to deny any Derby chances.  South were able to absorb the brief spell of pressure, and with great counter attacking continued to stretch the game and bring it into half time 2-0 up.

After a reassuring team talk, south were out of the gates quick in the second half. A few minutes in and Cavan ran half the pitch with  the ball shielded from a tracking defender, who even dropped his stick in awe of the one hand reverse dribble. A ruthless Cavan slotting it in the goal to give South a 3-0 lead.

The rest of the second half played out with South looking the more comfortable side with Jonesy and Willey controlling the midfield as they had in the first half.

South couldn’t quite get the usual landslide victory, having to settle with a hard fought 3-0 win to keep the 100% record intact.
