Vase Final - Saturday 3rd May - valiant South go down 4-3 in Final
South Nottingham Men's 1st XI went down 4-3 in the EH Vase final to UCLA HC at Chigwell, Essex on Saturday. UCLA scored on 17 mins when a ball across the D was collected by a UCL forward, narrowly beating keeper Peter Hextall to the ball, and was able to squeeze his shot under the keeper into an unguarded net. In a tight first half, South equalised just before half-time to send the home supporters wild.
But the second half saw UCL go into the lead 2-1, then adding a further goal to put South 3-1 behind. Many teams would have caved in at this point, but not South - they countered with a second goal, to bring the tie back to 3-2. UCL were not to be denied though, and they added a fourth which was largely down to slack defending, beating keeper Hextall at his right-hand post.
Still South would not lie down, and countered with a goal through Salim Khalid with three minutes left on the clock - but it was too late to grab an equaliser, and UCL deservedly collected the trophy at South's expense. So again, South finished as the bridesmaids in their second attempt to win the Vase in eight years.
It was a valiant attempt, and to be fair it can be said that there are not many times you will score three goals and still be beaten. On the day, manager Bryan Mallows said that the midfield never really got going, and UCL played the old water-based pitch much better than South. On the day, the better team won, though we all know that the team could have played much better and come away with the spoils - today was not that day.
Our congratulations go to UCLA on winning the Vase, having experienced defeat in the final last year. For South Nottingham, following our Centenary, it was a magnificent performance to win the EM Div 1 by ten clear points and to reach the final of the EH Vase - so close to a league and cup double. But take nothing away from this team; they will do us proud in the EM Premier League next season, with so many youngsters coming though showing real potential; next season will be an exciting one, with the challenge of getting back into Midlands Div 1 and a run in the EH Trophy being our targets. Make no mistake, South are on the up!

LATEST NEWS .... Junior's Awards Evening - Saturday, 29th March 2008
The Juniors Awards Evening was held at Caythorpe this on Saturday evening and was well attended by Junior members and their parents. We will be publishing a list of award winners as soon as these are available.
LATEST NEWS ....
Well, fairly old news, actually, as this has been probably been passed around the club by word of mouth anyway, but just to confirm it officially:-
Phil Cotterill (our Club Secretary) has decided to let someone else have a turn, and announced at the beginning of January that he will be standing down at the Club AGM in May. He has pledged to see out the remainder of the season in-post and will carry out a full hand-over of his duties, over a six-month period up to the start of the new season, to whoever feels they would like to play a major part in running the club. The role is varied and duties may be split between a number of volunteers to make things easier. For those interested in what the role of Club Secretary entails, there is a 'Job Description' available - just contact by email and he will send you a copy.
Ian Lane (our Club Chairman) tendered his resignation with immediate effect at the February Committee. Ian has decided that he needs to stand down immediately for personal reasons. The Feb Committee asked current Vice-Chair Richard Butler to stand in temporarily as Acting Vice-Chairman until the AGM, when he will stand for election (if he accepts the nomination).
Both Ian and Phil remain committed to South Nottingham HC's future development and will continue to assist Committee in whatever capacity necessary. Committee thanked both Ian and Phil for all their hard work over the years of their tenure.
I should add that all Senior/Youth members are eligible to volunteer for either of these posts, so if you wish to stand up and be counted, please contact Richard Butler direct, or feel free to discuss with any Committee member first. Apart from relevant experience, above all else nominees should have boundless enthusiasm! So if you feel you could perform either role, please don't be a shrinking violet!
